Storyscapes is a creative community-based project working to increase the visibility of Aboriginal stories, images and perspectives in Vancouver through story-telling, public art video and other media. Storyscapes celebrates the valuable contributions of Aboriginal people to Vancouver and their unique and important place.
Starting with the thousands of years of Coast Salish community on this land and continuing to the contemporary lives of Aboriginal people today, Storyscapes is committed to influencing how we live in this city through the recognition of Aboriginal presence.
This project also aims to involve local youth to research, interview, gather and record stories from the storytellers. In Aboriginal culture, young people are traditionally the ones who learn the stories and carry them forward. By involving young people, this project seeks to strengthen the valuable role of youth as storekeepers by giving them the skills and opportunities to connect to stories of their communities.
This project is a partnership between community organizations, the Vancouver Agreement and City of Vancouver, including: the Chief Dan George Centre for Advanced Education, the Knowledgeable Aboriginal Youth Association (KAYA), City of Vancouver Social Planning, Planning and Office of Cultural Affairs. This project was conceived by Aboriginal Social Planner and filmmaker Kamala Todd.
